Help for Tutors

What is Grukie?

Grukie is a premium service that facilitates tutor-student connections for private lessons.

Does tutoring through Grukie lead to full-time work?

That depends on you. While most tutors start off with a few lessons per week as a means of additional income or to simply become more involved in the community, growing a large client base requires continuous effort and patience.

Before Your First Lesson

What should I do once I find my first client?

You want to make a positive impact from the first moment. Take the initiative to go over any details or specifics with the student before that first lesson. This will allow both of you to hit the ground running.

Once I have the specifics, what’s the best way to prepare for a tutoring session?

This is ultimately up to the tutor, but we can give you tips to maximize the experience. During your initial discussion with the student, don’t hesitate to ask for a copy of the course syllabus if it’s available. Learn what textbooks they’re using and utilize resources such as the local library to acquire any relevant material. Preparing for the first lesson is always the hardest, but if you can schedule follow-up sessions, it will get easier because you’ll know exactly what to do.

Are tutors allowed to exchange phone numbers or Skype information with a potential student?

Yes, but you must pay a small fee (non-refundable) for all messages that include personal information (e.g., phone, email, address, etc). Please note that this is the only fee that will ever be applied for all of Grukie's services. All other messages that do not include personal information can be viewed or sent at no charge. Please note that this payment for the release or receipt of personal information does not guarantee response or a lesson. For example, some students choose to contact or provide information to multiple tutors or cancel the lessons before meeting you.

As a tutor, you keep 100% of your tutoring fee and you are responsible for keeping track of your lesson details (e.g., hours tutored), preparing for the tutoring sessions, and collecting payments for your services.

Grukie Email

I received an email from you stating that I must reply to a student, although I’ve already handled the reply. How should I proceed?

Simply double-check your Grukie mail to ensure you have no unread messages.

I had a new Grukie inquiry, but I received a no notification email to my primary address. What happened?

Double-check the spam folder for any lost messages and be sure to add support@grukie.com and no-reply@grukie.com to your address book. Should the problem continue, please let us know.

Why haven’t I received a response from potential students I’ve corresponded with by email?

It’s important to note that not all student inquiries lead to actual lessons. But when this happens, don’t be discouraged. Remember that there are plenty of other opportunities.

Billing and Payment Procedures

What should I do if I am asked to give a group rate for two or more students?

In situations like this, feel free to negotiate a new rate with the student(s).

If a student requests a lower rate that I would like to accommodate, what should I do?

You are always free to negotiate reduced rates with students.

What is the policy in the event of lesson cancellation? And how would I go about entering cancellation fees into the system?

Grukie does not have a policy on lesson cancellation. You are welcome to come up with your own policy, but make sure you communicate this policy before the first lesson. A fair policy might be to bill half the rate to any lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice.

Am I allowed to receive direct payments from students?

It is entirely up to you to decide how the potential students will pay you. The only fee (non-refundable) that will ever be applied for our services is small payment for messages that include personal information (e.g., phone, email, address, etc). All other messages can be viewed or sent at no charge.

Does Grukie offer any travel compensation?

Grukie does not offer travel compensation. Keep in mind, that the rate you charge your customers is designed to cover the lesson from beginning to end. This does not include your travel time.

Tutoring Procedures

Is it possible to conduct the first lesson with a student for free to get to know each other?

This is entirely up to you.

If I see that I’m unable to tutor an inquiring student, is it possible to refer this student to another tutor?

Yes, but the tutor must be in the Grukie network.

Is there any problem if I tutor students that I find outside of the Grukie network?

Of course not.
